Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at listersconcretepumping@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

We cover the majority of Scotland our concrete pumps are primarily based in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway, but we do have a line pump available across Dundee, Perth, Aberdeen and Inverness.

The time it takes to pump concrete varies depending on the quantity of concrete there is to pump, and what type of concrete pump you are using. However it usually takes anywhere from 10 to 25 minutes to unload 8 m3 of concrete. It takes around 30 to 45 minutes for us to set up and around an hour to pack and clean up.

There are lots of different reasons you might need a concrete pump, but these are the main reasons.

1. Access issues, meaning you are unable to get concrete directly where you need it to go.

2. Large quantities, having a large amount of concrete to pour and lay can be a challenging job but using a concrete pump can make the process go alot smoother.

Our concrete pumps can pump most types of concrete. As long as it's a 150 slump and a pump mix. We can pump 10mm & 20mm aggregates in the concrete. We can also pump flowing concretes and liquid screeds.

Concrete pump hire is hiring the use of our concrete pump, at Listers Concrete Pumping as well as the pump you will get a concrete pump operator, who will set up and control the pump as well as moving all the pipes and packing away.

Our concrete pumps can pump concrete up to 63 meters in distance.

A concrete line pump is a concrete pump where the pipes, which the concrete moves through, go along the ground. These are different to boom pumps which are on a crane system.

Listers Concrete Pumping will arrive on site around 30 minutes before the concrete arrives, from there we will get set up, and make sure everything is how it should be. Once we are all set up and ready to go a concrete wagon will deliver the concrete into the back of our concrete pump. This could be a concrete mixer or a volumetric concrete wagon. We then prime our concrete lines with a grout. Concrete then travels from the wagon through our concrete pump into wherever you want your concrete to be placed. Our team will move any pipe lines for you and then clean our equipment.

Key terms when using a concrete pump

Boom pump

Line pump

Line pump

A concrete pump mounted on a truck which has a hydraulically driven boom used to place the concrete wherever the concrete is required. This makes pumping concrete easier for the customer especially on large concrete pours, where large amounts of concrete are needed.

Line pump

Line pump

Line pump

This is a  mobile concrete pump which can either be on a trailer or truck mounted. This concrete pump uses pipes to pump the concrete along the ground making it possible to deliver concrete to hard to access areas.

Pump mix

Line pump

Pump mix

The term pump mix is used when ordering concrete, it is a concrete mix design which is used when using a concrete pump. A pump mix generally will have more sand and cement, helping it flow through a concrete pump.

Bagging

Flexi / rubber

Pump mix

A word for the pipeline or ground line or it can be used for the placing hose.

Boom

Flexi / rubber

Flexi / rubber

The boom is the hydraulically driven arm on a boom pump. Some people describe them as looking like a crane. The boom places the concrete.

Flexi / rubber

Flexi / rubber

Flexi / rubber

This is a term for a rubber flexible pipe which is used on either a boom pump or line pump these are often used in the area where the concrete is being laid as they are easy to move making it easier to lay the concrete.

Washout box

Washout box

Washout box

This is a word which describes a water tight box which fits under the hopper of a concrete pump. These are typically made out of wood and then lined with a waterproof sheeting.

Hopper

Washout box

Washout box

A hopper is where the concrete wagon pours the concrete into the back of the concrete pump.

Clip

Washout box

Concrete pump priming

A clip connects your pipes (or bagging) together and are also used to connect the pipe line to the concrete pump.

Concrete pump priming

Concrete pump priming

Priming the concrete pump is an essential part to pumping concrete, without priming a concrete would not be able to flow through the pipes. We typically use a bag of general purpose cement mixed with water. However you can purchase specific concrete primers which also prime the pipes.

Blockage

Concrete pump priming

Concrete pump

A blockage, is when the concrete cannot be pumped as it is blocked in the pipe line, this can happen because of several factors such as not using a pump mix or if concrete has started to separate due to issues with the concrete. Concrete is most likely to block when you first start pumping as the pipes are dry which causes it to block or the aggregate gets away from the rest of the concrete forming a blockage.

Concrete pump

A concrete pump is a piece on construction machinery which takes concrete from one location to a separate location - quite often a hard to access location on a construction site. There are different types of concrete pumps such as boom pumps, line pumps, static pumps, trailer pumps and tracked pumps.
